The Nightmare Realms ist ein Dark Fantasy RPG und spielt in den zwei verfeindeten Welten Vastallor und Illumina. Vastallor, ein düsteres, von Dämonen besiedeltes Land, welches von einem grausamen König regiert wird und unter dessen Streitmacht sich zahlreiche, furchterregende Kreaturen sammeln stellt sich gegen Illumina, die Welt der Menschen, in welcher sich ohne ihr Wissen zahlreiche andere Völker angesiedelt haben, von schönen Elfen, bis hin zu alles überwachenden Engeln. Getrennt werden diese Länder durch ein Portal, welches einst von dem Magier Merlin erschaffen wurde, um Dämonen und Lichtwesen voneinander zu trennen. Der damals geschlossene Pakt versiegelte das Portal für Jahrhunderte. Merlin ist längst nicht mehr unter uns, die Menschen haben die Schrecken der Anderswelt vergessen und die Dämonen haben ihr eigenes Reich aufgebaut. Doch nichts ist von Dauer, Magie schwindet und auch der Pakt verliert seine Macht. Die Kräfte schwanken, das Portal ist instabil und es ist nur noch eine Frage der Zeit, bis es in sich zusammenfällt. Wir schreiben das Jahr 8056. König Thanatos setzt alles daran, um sein Herrschaftsgebiet zu erweitern und Illumina sein eigen zu nennen.
